How Endowments Work

Endowments are funds that are permanently invested and managed by professionals, to generate a steady source of capital and provide a consistent income stream for the University.

  • An endowment is somewhat like a permanent investment account, where each contribution becomes invested principal.
  • A portion of the fund’s earnings (but not the invested principal) are used each year to support specific charitable purposes, but because the rest of the earnings are returned for reinvestment, the endowment grows over time.
  • By growing an endowment, we can offset the rising cost associated with carrying out its charitable purpose.
