This fall, Concordia University Chicago’s Ferguson Art Gallery will feature “Between the Lines,” a solo art exhibition by artist Marilyn Dale. The show runs Oct. 10 through Nov. 13, 2026, and is free and open to the public. A reception will be held on Sunday, Nov. 8, from 1 to 3 p.m., with an artist talk at 2 p.m. 

Inspired by her father’s more than 500 letters from the Pacific Theater during World War II, Dale transforms one soldier’s voice into luminous mixed-media paintings. While some letters are embedded in the pieces, the exhibition focuses on the artistic interpretations they inspired—brought to life through color, texture, and form.  

“These letters are the heart of the work,” Dale explained, “but the paintings themselves carry the emotions—faith, camaraderie, and longing—into a tangible, immersive experience.”  

Originally exhibited at North Central College’s Schoenherr Gallery in Naperville, Ill., in 2025, the show returns with several new three-dimensional works, offering a deeper exploration of the themes found in her father’s World War II correspondence. Altogether, the exhibition transforms her father’s letters into a visual experience of distance, sacrifice, and enduring love.  

Dale is a contemporary painter and member of the National Association of Women Artists and American Women Artists. Her work has appeared in juried shows at the Salmagundi Club in New York and in numerous galleries. A former marketing executive, Dale’s recent studio practice explores memory, devotion, and quiet heroism in everyday life. 

"This exhibition is a tribute to the unwavering spirit and sacrifice of our World War II service members," said Professor Nikkole Huss, Ferguson Art Gallery director and program leader of the Department of Art. "Woven from original letters between the artist’s parents during World War II, these mixed-media layers are fused together by the enduring light of faith, the resilience of love, and the bravery of all who served."

The exhibition is also part of Concordia-Chicago's Stand Tall for Freedom series, which commemorates America’s 250th anniversary.

Visitors can experience Dale's work at the Ferguson Art Gallery, located in Kretzmann Hall at Concordia-Chicago, 7400 Augusta St., River Forest, Ill. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
