Concordia University Chicago welcomes friends and neighbors to share in the joy of Christmas with two free events: the University Band Christmas Concert on Friday, Dec. 5 at 8 p.m., and the Service of Lessons and Carols on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 7 at 4 p.m. Both events will be held in the University’s Chapel of Our Lord.
The University Band’s program features “Festive Overture” by Dmitri Shostakovich, “O Magnum Mysterium” by Morten Lauridsen, and cinematic favorite “The Polar Express” by Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard. Other pieces to be performed include Christmas classics such as “The Holly and the Ivy” arranged by Chip Davis and “Sleigh Ride” by Leroy Anderson. Meg Busse, Concordia-Chicago’s senior director of advancement operations and adjunct faculty member will provide commentary throughout the evening.
The University Band is an ensemble of approximately 70 players including CUC students, staff, faculty, and other community members, led by Dr. Richard Fischer, distinguished professor of music and the Fred and Jane Wittlinger Endowed Chair in Music Performance.
After Friday’s University Band concert, the pre-Christmas celebration continues with Services of Lessons and Carols on Saturday and Sunday.
Lessons and Carols is a beloved Christmas service of Scripture and song. Through readings, choral anthems, congregational carols, and organ and instrumental music, attendees will be encouraged to reflect on the promise and coming of Christ. Presented by CUC student ensembles and faculty musicians, this annual tradition invites those of all ages to pause, listen, and sing. Pre-service music begins 20 minutes prior to the start of each performance.
If you cannot attend in person, a recording of one of this year’s Service of Lessons and Carols will be available to stream at here beginning at 6:40 p.m. Sunday evening.
Seating in the chapel is first-come, first-served. Concordia University Chicago is located at 7400 Augusta St., River Forest, IL. Free off-street parking is available in the University’s parking structure, south of Division Street on Bonnie Brae Place.
