Concordia University Chicago announced that Dr. Erik Ankerberg has been named as Provost. He has served as the University’s Associate Vice President for Academics and professor of English since 2017. In this role, he will ensure that the University continues to live out its commitments to teaching, learning and student success for all students. He will also continue his leadership of the University’s ongoing strategic planning and academic prioritization processes.
“Dr. Ankerberg has become a trusted advisor and has earned the respect of his colleagues during the past three years,” says CUC President Dr. Russell Dawn. “He brings exceptional knowledge and skills in leadership, accreditation and strategic planning to this crucial role and will help ensure that Concordia-Chicago continues to provide outstanding academic programming and support services to each and every one of our students.”
Offices or individuals reporting to Ankerberg include the Chief Academic Officer, Senior Vice Provost for Strategic Enrollment Partnerships, Assistant Provost for Mission and Identity, Dean of Students, Registrar, Associate Vice President for Graduate Admission and Enrollment Services, and college Deans. The Provost also serves as the University’s second-in-command, allowing Ankerberg to temporarily fulfill the functions of the Office of the President should the President be prevented from doing so. Creation of a Provost-centered model at the University is the first step of a broader academic restructuring, which will ensure the University is following best higher education and pedagogical practices.
Ankerberg is a Concordia University Chicago alumnus, having earned his Bachelor of Arts from CUC. He also holds a Master of Arts and a PhD in British Renaissance Literature from Marquette University. His research explores both aesthetics and the intersection of early modern literature and theology. Prior to joining the Concordia-Chicago administration, he acted as University Provost and Chief Academic Officer at Concordia University Texas. He served in several roles at Wisconsin Lutheran College, including Assistant Provost, Chair of the School of Modern Languages, Director of the Honors Program and Gary Greenfield Chair in Christian Leadership Studies. Ankerberg also taught English at Concordia University Ann Arbor and Concordia University Wisconsin, and is currently pursuing pastoral ordination within the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. He and his wife Jennifer, also a Concordia-Chicago alumna, reside in Wheaton, IL.
