The Artists of Concordia Theatre Presents “American Home”

Concordia University Chicago’s Artists of Concordia Theatre (A.C.T.), in partnership with Chicago Dramatists, presents American Home beginning October 3. Performances will take place at Concordia-Chicago’s new performance space in the Madison Street Theatre, 1010 Madison Street, Oak Park, IL.

Written by Stephanie Alison Walker and directed by Meghan Beals McCarthy, American Home focuses on the extremes people go to when faced with losing their homes and having to renegotiate the American dream. The troubles of the housing crisis are seen through the eyes of a 90 year-old widow, a young professional couple, a passionate preacher, and a police officer whose unpleasant duty is to kick people out of their homes.

American Home is the first collaborative production between A.C.T. and Chicago Dramatists—a partnership dedicated to the creation and production of new plays as well as laboratory training for theatre professionals in the city of Chicago.

Stephanie Alison Walker is an award-winning playwright whose work has been produced across the United States from New York City to Los Angeles and internationally in Australia, Canada, Singapore, The Philippines and Japan. American Home won Walker the American Blues Theater Company’s Blue Ink Award for Playwriting in 2011.

Chicago-based director Meghan Beals McCarthy’s credits include the Goodman Theatre, Steppenwolf and Chicago Dramatists, and previously serving as the Associate Artistic Director at Chicago Dramatists. She is also the recent recipient of Theatre Communications Group’s Leadership U Continuing Education Grant, which allows her to visit new play development centers across the country.

American Home runs October 3-13, with performances Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. A post-show discussion with playwright Stephanie Alison Walker will follow the October 4 production. Tickets are $15 for the general admission, with discounts for students and senior citizens.
