Gathered under the theme “Together, a New Creation”, Concordia-Chicago inaugurates its 157th academic year. In this Christian worship service, we ask God’s blessings upon our educational endeavors while rededicating ourselves to Christ’s calling to “continue in my word” (John 8:31). Serving as preacher will be the Rev. Dr. Allan Buss, District President of the Northern Illinois District (LCMS).
At this Sunday’s Opening Service we will install called Church workers, induct all new faculty and staff, and give thanks to God for Distinguished Professors, Dr. Sandra Doering, Dr. H. Robert Hayes, and Dr. O. John Zillman. Linda Holowicki will receive the Distinguished Service Award for forty years of dedicated service.
A newly commissioned setting of CUC's hymn of the year, “In Christ There Is No East or West” (Lutheran Service Book 653) will be premiered. The University is honored that Stacey V. Gibbs, an accomplished composer and arranger, has offered his considerable talents to enliven this African-American spiritual for our edification.
NOTE: A traditional procession and recognition of Golden Alumni will not take place during this year's event.
