Dr. Victoria Hansen has encouraged many of her colleagues to continue their education at CUC
When Dr. Victoria Hansen was promoted in April 2022 to her current position of superintendent in Bellwood School District 88, Concordia-Chicago’s College of Education was proud to add her achievement to those of its thousands of distinguished alumni-educators. Hansen completed her PhD in educational leadership at Concordia-Chicago in 2019.
At 39, Dr. Hansen is one of the youngest individuals ever to serve in the district’s highest administrative role. Herself a product of Proviso Township—born in Maywood, and raised in Broadview—Hansen will direct the district’s ongoing progress toward serving the educational needs of its diverse student population.
“My CUC experience was a great balance of theory and practice,” Dr. Hansen recalls. ”My tutelage helped to refine my research skills but also allowed me to learn from seasoned practitioners who had served as assistant superintendents and superintendents.”
Dr. Hansen places considerable credit for her impressive career trajectory on her success in CUC’s doctoral program. “At the onset of my program” she notes, “I was an assistant principal. After a short few years of learning about the inner workings of the school district from the perspective of central office leaders and through coursework … I moved from principal to curriculum director, to assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction, to superintendent.”
Dr. Hansen’s passion for teaching and learning is expressed in myriad ways, one of which is promoting the continued professional development of the district’s teachers. With Hansen’s strong encouragement, a cohort of 13 Bellwood teachers completed CUC master’s degrees in curriculum and instruction in 2022. The positive potential impact of the program on teachers is enormous, Hansen says: “I realized how critically important it is to have a deep understanding of standards, assessment, curriculum review, planning and development.”
“I have learned so much from so many people within my Concordia-Chicago circle,” Dr. Hansen observes. “I am so glad that I chose CUC for my doctoral work.”
