Chris and Katie Schelp

A goal to pursue a dual path in music and church work led Chris Schelp ’05, MA ’06, to attend Concordia University Chicago. According to Schelp, “Concordia’s music program was, and is, of the highest quality and reputation. I knew that I would be able to expand my musical horizons in the ensembles at CUC.”

Schelp earned a BA in music and returned to obtain his MA in music with an emphasis in church music. He currently serves as the Director of Music at First Lutheran Church and School in Ponca City, Oklahoma.  “I am blessed to serve God and His people by leading them in worship, both as an organist and choir and handbell director.”  Schelp recently took on the responsibility of teaching music to kindergarten through fifth grade students at First Lutheran.

Schelp counts his experience travelling to China with Concordia-Chicago’s Wind Symphony among the best experiences in his life. “As someone who had never been overseas, I found China to be an amazing place for so many reasons. He doesn’t hesitate to share, “The most memorable experience was my engagement to my wife, Katie (Meier ‘06) in the Forbidden City.”

Today, Katie Schelp is an elementary music teacher at Ponca City Public Schools in Oklahoma, where she teaches more than 600 kindergarten through fifth grade students daily. Katie says, "I am passionate about providing positive musical experiences that will lay a foundation for a life-long appreciation and love for music."

She continues to grow professionally. Katie is a local officer for the Music Teacher's National Association and is also a member of the Orff-Schulwerk Association and the Organization of American Kodaly Educators. "The CUC music faculty encouraged and modeled the importance of life-long  learning," she recalls. "They encouraged, challenged and motivated me as a musician and an individual."
