Makin' Tracks 5k Run/Walk

Feb. 15, 2010–– In recognition of Women’s History Month, Concordia University Chicago will host a series of art exhibits, discussions, lectures and other free events on the University’s campus throughout March.

All events are free to the public and take place on the Concordia campus, 7400 Augusta St., River Forest. Free, handicapped-accessible parking is available in the University’s parking structure on Bonnie Brae Street. For more information, visit www.cuchicago.edu or call 708-209-3111.

Concordia events celebrating women’s history include:

Art Exhibition by Concordia-Chicago Art Faculty, Feb. 21- March 22: Concordia University Chicago’s Ferguson Art Gallery honors Women’s History Month through an exhibit of painting, fiber, clay, drawing, prints and mixed media works by Concordia’s female art faculty.
 
Artists’ lecture, March 1: Concordia faculty and artists Maria Gedroc, M.A.A.A., adjunct professor of art; Deb Herman, M.F.A., associate professor of art and curator of the Concordia University Chicago Art Collection; Nikkole Huss, M.F.A., assistant professor of art; and BettyAnn Mocek, M.F.A., professor of art and director of the Ferguson Art Gallery, will discuss their work, the creative process and what inspires and moves them to create art at 7 p.m. at the Ferguson Art Gallery in Kretzmann Hall.

“Why We Love the Game: A 50-Year Conversation with Cougar Alumnae,” March 2:
A panel discussion led by Concordia-Chicago female athletes from each of the last five decades will examine the history of Concordia’s women athletics and recognize the golden anniversary of women’s athletics on campus from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. in the n the Koehneke Community Center, Oak Park River Forest Room.

“Diabolical Women, Wicked Witches and Old Hags IV: Researching Women’s and Gender Studies,” March 17:
Michelle Morkert, Ph.D., associate professor of English, and David Settje, Ph.D., associate professor of history, discuss the importance of women, why gender matters and how it affects individuals, at 7 p.m. in the Koehneke Community Center, Alumni Room.

“Reengineering Gender in Modern Militaries,” March 24:  Guest speaker Rebecca J. Hannagan, Ph.D., assistant professor of political science at Northern Illinois University, will discuss the role gender plays in small group interaction, 7 p.m. in the Koehneke Community Center, Alumni Room. Hannagan’s work has been published in several journals including Political Behavior, PS: Political Science and Politics, the Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science and Biology and Philosophy.

In addition to these events, Concordia University Chicago and Dominican University will host their second annual joint Women’s and Gender Studies Conference for students, faculty and staff of the two universities on March 20. The University’s combined faculty and students will host panels on the interdisciplinary study of women's and gender studies.
