Dec. 11, 2009—The first MBA graduates of Concordia University Chicago’s College of Business are also authors of a pledge that their successors will take for years to come: a business pledge to uphold integrity, justice, sustainable prosperity and the greater good.
At a private ceremony with faculty the night before their Dec. 11 commencement, the eight MBAs-to-be became the first to take the “Concordia University Chicago MBA Pledge” they developed in the fall. The pledge reads:
As a Concordia University Chicago MBA graduate, my purpose is to create value by serving the greater good. Therefore, I promise:
As a global citizen, I will work to create sustainable prosperity and justice;
I will understand and uphold the laws and obligations governing my behavior and that of the venture I represent;
I will act with integrity in all matters;
I will respect and honor the differences, rights and dignity of all people;
I will provide counsel to individuals seeking guidance;
I will be true to myself and I will take responsibility for all of my actions;
These principles will serve as a guide and I make this pledge freely and upon my honor.
Thunderbird School of Global Management in Phoenix, Ariz., is considered creator of the MBA oath concept: a business pledge to respect business management ideals akin to physicians' Hippocratic oath or the attorneys’ oaths before admission to the bar.
In the wake of corporate scandal and financial crises since 2006, the concept picked up attention with a grassroots movement in spring 2009 as students at Harvard Business School developed a business oath at www.mbaoath.org.
However, Concordia and its MBA students—who are administrators and employees at several area financial institutions—appear to be one of the few in the Chicago area to develop their own pledge, according to Walt Catlow, Concordia-Chicago College of Business dean.
“Adding to the work of several schools and that of the University of Wisconsin, our students created a pledge that is both comprehensive and useful for everyday guidance,” Catlow said. “It was a pleasure to watch them get excited about taking their place as productive executives on our fragile planet and prepare to uphold the highest ethical standards.”
