Artist's Reception in celebration of Latino History Month
June 11, 2009— Faculty and student artists have come together for Concordia University Chicago’s sixth annual “Summer Art Show,” featuring fiber art, darkroom photography, etching and other works on exhibit through July 31 at the Ferguson Art Gallery at Concordia University Chicago.
The Ferguson Art Gallery is located in Kretzmann Hall at Concordia University Chicago, 7400 Augusta St., River Forest. Featured artists include:
Maria Gedroc, M.A.A.A., adjunct professor of art, displaying work in mixed media painting. Gedroc’s art focuses on urban environments including the Chicago metropolitan area as well as the small neighborhoods surrounding them. Among the local artists who have been featured in Chicago Art Scene, Gedroc most recently displayed her work during Women’s History Month in March at the Chicago Public Library Uptown Branch.
Deb Herman, M.F.A., associate professor of art, exhibiting works based on fiber art. Herman, who teaches multiple art courses at Concordia, is amid research funded by a three-year grant from the John and Frances Beck Foundation for Literacy to produce a collection of Web-based art lessons on 14th- through 19th-century artists. A chair and member of a number of boards and committees, Herman has displayed her art in local, national and international exhibitions.
Nikkole Huss, M.F.A., assistant professor of art, displaying work in drawing and painting. As an artist who works in drawing, painting, fiber, sculpture and photography, she has exhibited in shows and galleries in Germany, Italy, New York, San Francisco and elsewhere. Currently, 32 pieces of Huss’ work are featured at the Tall Grass Arts Association in Park Forest.
BettyAnn Mocek, M.F.A., professor of art and director of the Ferguson Art Gallery, displaying her work in etching. Mocek has received numerous awards for her work in the arts including the Chicago Artists' Coalition's 2003 award for Special Service to the Visual Arts in Chicago and recognition as the Chicago Society of Artists’ 2001 Woman of the Year. Mocek’s art has been displayed in local and national exhibitions. Her most recent work was “Collaborative Vision: The Poetic Dialogue Project,” a traveling exhibition of 30 pieces displayed at the Chicago Cultural Center.
Richard Richter, director of instructional design, assistant professor in education technology and adjunct assistant professor in communications, art and theatre, exhibiting his darkroom photography. Richter, who has previously exhibited at the Ferguson gallery, specializes in photography. He has held membership in the Professional Photographers of America and pursues research interest in visual literacy, the ability to create meaning from information presented in the form of an image.
In addition to the faculty artists, students artists in Concordia’s art program are exhibiting an eclectic range of works as part of the exhibit.
Bringing the region’s rich diversity of visual art to the Oak Park/River Forest and University communities, Ferguson Art Gallery at Concordia University Chicago showcases the works of established and upcoming. Chicago-area artists in five to six exhibits each year, including special events celebrating African-American perspective, Hispanic heritage, women’s history and Chicago history.
The gallery is directed by BettyAnn Mocek, Concordia professor of art and a prominent Chicago artist, educator and arts advocate through her work with the Chicago Coalition of Artists, the Chicago Society of Artists and others.
