Dear Brothers,

Warm greetings this dark time of year with the light of our Christ!

Having been a parish pastor…needing to be in the pulpit at almost every service, and sometimes having the added preaching responsibility of nursing homes…being a high school chaplain…I really appreciate honest, down-to-earth help with the serious work and great joy of preaching. I am sure you can relate. You may have some great discussions among your staff or circuit brothers that help a great deal, but most of us keep our eyes open for insights, outlines, good illustrations and just plain ideas. Having just celebrated the Incarnation, this may not sound like gospel, but Lent begins Feb 6th.

You probably are well aware that the new lectionary has brought a few changes in the cycle of lessons. Accordingly, even those very seasoned preachers among us with deep files may find themselves casting about for ideas.

Seeing our role here at the University as serving the Church, I would like to invite you to attend a Lenten/Easter Preaching Study series led here on campus by some of our outstanding Greek and New Testament professors.  Prof. Robert Sorensen, the main leader, writes:

"The goal of each session is to study a pair of upcoming Gospel lessons, identify some of each pericope's more important theological points, and so assist the participants in their Lenten and Easter sermon preparations. We will begin by quickly reading through the original Greek, pausing here and there to highlight significant structural, rhetorical, and lexical aspects of the passage under review. Then, the pastors will be expected to (encouraged to?) chime in with their comments. It is hoped that they will suggest possible sermon outlines, offer applications to our modern life, and perhaps share some illustrations."

If this is your regular circuit time, we can arrange for a space for you to conduct circuit business. You are welcome to arrive and or depart as necessary.  Come early for coffee and fellowship, if you wish, stay for chapel and lunch. However, we will sincerely endeavor to make your trip here valuable for the preaching task this coming Lenten/Easter season.

May the light of Christ shine brightly in this new season of light!  Blessed Epiphany,

In His Service,
Rev. Harry Therwanger
