Educational Leadership: DCE Professional Courses
EDL-2300: Parish Education in Perspective - 3 hoursHistorical exploration of the role of Christian education in the parish. Explore the contributions of Lutheran theology in Law and Gospel, and the ways in which 20th century educational theorists have influenced Christian education and values.
EDL-2991: DCE Practicum I - 2 hours
Develop students' understanding of DCE ministry as well as clarify commitment to serving in a congregational setting through the study of the history and roles of the DCE. Parish field observations required.
EDL-2992: DCE Practicum II - 2 hours
Focus upon issues related to the DCE profession; development of vision and philosophy of DCE ministry. Emphasis on involvement at field experience site and preparation for admission to the DCE program. Prerequisite: EDLF-2991 or approval of program coordinator.
EDL-4300: Foundations of DCE Ministry - 3 hours
The DCE profession. History and roles of the DCE. Parish and staff relationships explored. Clarifying personal commitment to service in the congregational setting.
EDL-4311: Parish Teaching I - 4 hours
Principles, organization, materials and practices of teaching the Christian faith to early childhood students through junior high school youth; special attention to Sunday School and confirmation instruction and programs. Students will gain experience in actual teaching situations and in structuring lessons. Field work required.
EDL-4312: Parish Teaching II - 4 hours
Principles, organization, materials and practices of teaching the Christian faith to senior high school youth and adults; special attention to Bible class and small group ministry. Students will gain experience in actual teaching situations and in structuring lessons. Field work required.
EDL-4320: Administration of Parish Education - 3 hours
Basic principles and practical implications for organization, operation and evaluation of Sunday School and midweek programs, youth and adult Bible classes, vacation Bible school, small group ministry, preschool and day-care programs and the recruitment and training of lay teachers. Field work required.
EDL-4330: Youth Ministry Theory and Practice - 3 hours
Philosophical and theological foundation underlying youth work in a Christian congregation; emphasis on a relational orientation. Specific skills for parish ministry with junior and senior high school youth. Peer caring, program development and administration, training of adult counselors, planning and leading youth events. Field work required.
EDL-4340: Church Leadership Development - 3 hours
Developing the servant leader role related to the vision, mission, and goals of a local congregation's education and youth ministries. Field work required.
EDL-4350: Church Leadership Lab - 3 hours
Enables students to understand and critique ways congregations organize themselves for ministry. Equips students to be servant leaders who pursue and contribute to the vision, mission, and goals of a local congregation. Field work required. Prerequisite: instructor approval.
EDL-4600: Politics and Policies in Urban Education - 3 hours
Urban power structures, change, reform, community relations, and funding as related to schooling.
EDL-4911: Director of Christian Education Seminar I - 1 hour
Focus on intern-related needs, issues, skills, and areas of knowledge. Responsibilities and situations interns typically encounter during the first six months of internship. Prerequisite: senior level standing or program coordinator's approval.
EDL-4912: Director of Christian Education Seminar II - 1 hour
Responsibilities and situations interns typically encounter during the last six months of internship. Building an internship support network. Prerequisite: EDL 4911 and senior standing or program coordinator's approval.
EDL-4980: Practicum in Parish Education - 3 hours
On-campus seminars and off-campus field experience focusing on the history, role, function, and value of the director of Christian education ministry.
EDL-4990: Director of Christian Education Internship - 24 hours
A supervised twelve-month field experience designed to provide opportunities to become more familiar and more competent with DCE ministry in a Lutheran congregation.The student registers for 12 semester hours in each of two separate semesters.
