The 2008 ALCF conference will explore the relationship between how we know from the neurological basis; knowing oneself, through discussions based in the liberal arts tradition of the classic relationships between mind and body, reason and emotion; and Who knows us, emerging viewpoints on the place and identity of Lutheran Christian higher education in a global society.

Speakers, presenters and conversation will lead participants in thoughtful dialogue leading to understanding, synergistic thinking and potential collaboration among participants.  Join us!

Keynote Speaker:
Douglas Anderson, M.D.

“Neuroscience, Music, and Theology: Singing a New Song”

Douglas Anderson MD graduated from University of Illinois at Chicago with a degree in chemistry, completed his MD at Chicago Medical School, and did his Internship and residency in neurosurgery at Loyola University Medical Center. He is presently Professor in the department of Neurological Surgery at Loyola University Medical Center and Stritch School of Medicine. His research involves patient assessed outcomes in posterior fossa microsurgery, trigeminal neuralgia, deep brain stimulation (DBS) for movement disorder and intractable psychiatric illness, and the emerging field of "neuro-ethics".

During his residency he became a member of Grace Lutheran Church in River Forest, IL and began participating as bass soloist in the Grace Church Bach Cantata Series, begun by Paul Bouman in the early 1970s. In addition, he also sings with Chicago's Music of the Baroque on a regular basis and has appeared with many of Chicago's ensemble groups as baritone soloist, including the Grant Park Symphony, Bach Week Evanston, the Rembrandt Players, Victoria Bach Festival (Texas), Washington Island Music Festival, and others. He was recently featured on WTTW Channel 11 (PBS) "Chicago Tonight" as well as interviews on WBEZ Chicago Public Radio.

Dr. Anderson also serves on the Advisory Board of the Martin Marty Center for the Advanced Study of Public Religion at University of Chicago.

He and his wife, Ann (Lueking), are the parents of four children.
