College of Education

Jane Buerger, Ph.D., Dean

The College of Education dates from the founding of Concordia in 1864 and continues to be central to the mission of the University.

The College of Education prepares teachers, school leaders, school counselors, and Directors of Christian Education (DCE) to successfully meet the demands of church and society for a liberally educated person with sound pre-professional studies and practice. The Concordia educator and DCE are prepared as servant leaders who demonstrate integrity and competence. Competencies manifest themselves in the concern and care Concordia graduates afford every pupil and in the service and leadership they provide for schools, congregations and communities.

The College of Education at the undergraduate level prepares school personnel for early childhood education, elementary, middle and secondary schools, special education classrooms, K-12 music, parish education, and ministry as a Director of Christian education.

At the graduate level, the College of Education offers programs in teacher preparation, reading, school leadership, early childhood education, and school counseling. A program is also available for DCE's who either desire to pursue initial certification or who want to deepen their existing skills to support their current ministries.  A number of these programs are also offered in a post-baccalaureate format.

At the doctoral level, a degree with a specialization in early childhood education, public school leadership, nonpublic school leadership, or public school leadership with a superintendent's endorsement is available for qualifying candidates.

The College of Education at Concordia University, is fully accredited by both the Illinois State Board of Education and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE); 201 Massachusetts Avenue NW, Suite 500, Washington DC 20036; phone (202) 466-7496 since 1962. All of the education programs at Concordia are also individually accredited by the corrresponding professional specialty associations.
