Majors and Specialties
Sociology
Sociology also provides invaluable training in social scientific research and analysis. A capstone course allows sociology majors the opportunity to work closely with a sociology faculty member on a research issue of the student's own choosing. A few of the directed research projects undertaken over the last several years have focused upon: the homeless, church congregations, family interaction, labor unions, minority group assimilation, police work, and religious beliefs. The department also provides students the opportunity to engage in an internship experience in a variety of settings.
Sociology students have distinguished themselves by presenting the results of their research at several local and national conferences including The Associated Colleges of the Chicago Area symposium, the Midwest Sociological Association, and The American Sociological Association. In addition, the department has had several students accepted into the highly competitive Pew Younger Scholar Summer Institute program.
Social Work
Introduction to Social Welfare, a class you can take your first year at Concordia, takes you to a number of different social work settings to explore the practice of social work. Learn firsthand from people already in the field and find out if social work is truly for you.
Field experience lets you apply theories and concepts you have learned in class to real world settings. You will receive extensive exposure to different areas of social work and still be able to arrange the experience to satisfy your specific goals and needs. As the field experience continues, your faculty advisor will work closely with you to assist your progress. The bottom line for our students is that they get the experience they want and need.
Concordia offers a Social Work major and a minor in Sociology.
