Geography

Geography, Earth Science, and Environmental Studies have been a significant part of the academic programs at Concordia for over half a century. The department maintains a collection of maps, atlases, rock and mineral specimens, aerial photographs, slides, videos, models, globes, field equipment, and digital spatial and database layers. These collections add to the classroom experience and benefit the entire campus.

In addition, a weather station dedicated to Dr. Herbert Gross is maintained by the department. Dr. Gross, a nationally known geographer, was a faculty member at Concordia. Thanks in part to the Gross memorial fund, the department enjoys strong funding and support. Augmenting classroom instruction in the department is our new state-of-the-art Applied Geographic Information Systems (AGIS) Lab. With the latest in GIS, computer mapping, spatial and statistical analysis software, the AGIS lab provides for the instruction of GIS, computer mapping, and basic cartography. In addition, it provides support for all geography and earth sciences courses and serves as an outlet for community-wide GIS services in which students are encouraged to play an active role.
